Day Trips from Fort Lauderdale


Fort Lauderdale is just a town filled with wonderful attractions and amenities.  It's the kind of place you can be so content in, you may not want to make your way anywhere else while you're there.

However, if you have the time, there are many appealing towns outside of Fort Lauderdale that we think you would enjoy visiting.  This would no doubt give you the whole "South Florida Experience". 

Other parts of Florida are easy to get to from Fort Lauderdale, because of it's convenience to many well-traveled highways, such as I-95, I-75 and the Florida Turnpike. 

Below are other parts of South Florida that we consider to make splendid Day Trips from Fort Lauderdale.  You might even want to spend a night or two at some of these fabulous Florida spots.  They include: Captiva & Sanibel Islands, Naples, Palm Beach and Key West.

Captiva Island, Florida

Captiva Island

Located past Sanibel Island is Captiva island, a quaint barrier island that has a calming, remote feel to it. Captiva has appealing beaches and charming restaurants and warrants a day trip if you really want to feel like you got away, even if it's only for a few hours.

Fort Lauderdale to Captiva Island takes about 4 hours. The only way to reach Captiva Island is by taking the Sanibel Causeway. Once in Sanibel, head approximately 10 miles north on the scenic Sanibel-Captiva Road.  
Fort Myers Beach Florida
Fort Myers & Fort Myers Beach


Across the state and a little North from Fort Lauderdale is Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach. Fort Myers Beach is comprised of Estero Island and San Carlos Island. There is a laid-back, anything goes feel to Fort Myers Beach similar to that of Key West, with its outgoing & friendly restaurants and people. They also have a scenic fishing pier.

It is about 130 miles and takes roughly 2.5 hours to get from Fort Lauderdale to Fort Myers Beach, via I-75. We recommend bringing plenty of quarters for their beach parking meters if you decide to visit Fort Myers Beach.
Key West FloridaKey West

Just a few hours South of Fort Lauderdale is the quaint island of Key West.

Getting to Key West from Fort Lauderdale usually takes about five hours with moderate traffic as you head south on I-95 and Route 1.  It is a beautiful and pleasant ride to and from Key West, and there are many stops you can make along the way in old-world towns such as Marathon and Islamorada.
Melbourne Beach Florida

You certainly don't need a space shuttle to touch down on Florida's Space Coast. 
The town of Melbourne, Florida makes for a nice day trip from the Palm Beach area.  Besides being home to the United States Space Program, and NASA's Kennedy Space Center Complex, there are other things going on in Melbourne. Attractions include the Brevard Art Museum, Henegar Center for the Arts, Liberty Bell Memorial Museum and Funday Discovery Tours on Melbourne's beautiful coast.

It is approximately 155 miles between Fort Lauderdale and Melbourne via I-95.

Miami Beach FloridaMiami Beach

Just a few towns south of Fort Lauderdale is the magnificent Miami Beach. There are so many things to explore in this culturally diverse metropolitan area. For starters, there's the Miami Seaquarium, Bal Harbour Shops, South Beach, Miami SkyLift, Vizcaya Estate & Gardens, Museum of Contemporary Art, Coconut Grove  and Key Biscayne. Getting to Miami Beach from Fort Lauderdale takes about an hour via Interstate 95.

Naples FloridaNaples

Naples is by far one of the most pristine towns in Florida. One can be instantly awed from just its shopping, dining and beaches alone.

There are many parts of Naples to explore.  For dining, strolling and shopping, we suggest: Fifth Avenue and Third Street Downtown, as well as the Waterside Shops, Venetian Village and Miromar Outlets.

From Fort Lauderdale, Naples is an easy 110 mile drive via Alligator Alley (I-75).

Palm Beach Florida

The Palm Beaches are another great place to travel to while in Miami Beach. It's affluence, beauty and style are need to be seen to be appreciated. 
Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Wellington, Singer Island are a few towns in Palm Beach County to enjoy.

Sanibel Island Florida

Like Captiva, Sanibel is a barrier island and is easily accessible via the Sanibel Causeway. Most of Sanibel's population is on the East end of the island, but their picturesque beaches and tasty restaurants are spread throughout. Shopping, shelling, watercraft sports and dining are popular activities on Sanibel Island.

It is 155 miles from Fort Lauderdale to Sanibel Island, when taking I-75, otherwise known as Alligator Alley.
